How to avoid tourist traps on vacation

Image of a city with tourist traps, and how to avoid them.

Whether it’s overpriced restaurants, unbearable crowds, mass-produced souvenirs, or staged “authentic” tours, tourist traps are unfortunately well known to travelers! Fortunately, there are simple strategies to avoid being taken advantage of and to enjoy a trip that is as enriching as it is authentic.  Here is how to avoid tourist traps like a pro.

Find good restaurants

Establishments that display multilingual menus with standardized photos and are located close to tourist attractions are clearly targeting tourists, and the chances of finding inflated prices for mediocre cuisine are very high. It’s better to find and choose small restaurants frequented by locals, a little further away from the main attractions, and with much more reasonable prices.

Avoid souvenir shops near the main attractions

Souvenirs sold near tourist sites are often expensive and mass-produced. It’s better to opt for souvenirs found in craft markets or local cooperatives. You should be able to find unique treasures to take home with you!

Look for alternative experiences

To enjoy unique and authentic experiences in the country you are visiting, it is better to opt for alternative experiences to the biggest attractions. For example, instead of visiting the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand, which are beautiful but very crowded and touristy, it is better to try the Koh Yao Noi or Koh Mak Islands, which are much quieter and have a local atmosphere.

Pro tip: ‍by typing “Alternative + name of the activity” into Google, you’ll discover places that are just as spectacular, often free or low-cost, and much more authentic.

Research the country

It’s important to learn about the country, its customs, culture, currency, and exchange rate. You can check out travel blogs, forums, or even watch videos by creators. All of these sources will give you the information you need about a destination. What’s more, by learning about local customs, average prices, and common scams, you’ll be able to travel with more confidence and respect for the culture you’re discovering.

Don’t accept fake gifts

At certain destinations, some vendors will offer you gifts such as flowers, bracelets, or small souvenirs. However, once you accept them, they will insist that you pay and may become aggressive. Firmly but politely refuse these gifts.

Avoiding tourist traps does not mean being suspicious, it simply means being a savvy traveler. Bon voyage!
